How it goes today

How code reviews currently work

A reviewer opens a pull request with a title and a description, then hunts through pages of diffs for the change that matters. Leave halfway, and the place is gone. The next screens walk through that review, one moment at a time.

  1. 01 The open
  2. 02 The description
  3. 03 The files
  4. 04 The place

01

Developers jump into a pull request.

Sometimes with context. Often without. The review starts from a title and whoever happens to open it.

02

Then you read the description. Or you try to.

The description is the author’s comment. That is the context you get before the diff.

03

Next you open the files tab.

Pages of diffs. Generated lockfiles. Typo edits. Hidden among them is the code a person should actually consider.

04

Halfway through, you get pulled away.

You leave the page. When you come back, the files tab is at the top again. You start over the diffs you already read.
